What is the difference between vector and other images?
Simply put, vector images can be resized unlimited widths and heights without losing any resolution. If you would like a more in depth answer; most images are defined pixel by pixel by color, where as vector images define a few points and draw what belongs in between those points. So instead of a 100 pixel long line being made up of 100 pixels of information, the file defines a point at each end and says draw a certain color line in between those lines.
The main advantage is that you can move these two points and the line is still drawn inbetween without any loss of resolution. A disadvantage is that complex drawings and photos become huge in file size when the number of points that needs to be defined gets too high.
To get the best idea, you should download an example and open it in Macromedia Fireworks.
